In our contemporary actuality, populism and extremists amass. My art draws parallels to a defunct time I haven’t experienced and problematize a society where xenophobia, alienation and gentrification becomes normalized.
My name is Jonn Schlemayer, 29 years old and originally from Sweden living in Norway. This spring I completed my BFA at Bergen Academy of Art in Norway with exchanges at both Camberwell College of Arts (University of Arts London) and Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver, Canada.
I create Staged Photography, an effective form of achieving something not able to create through a single exposure. I merge hundreds of images creating large, highly detailed photographs which often features anonymous groups in combination with urban areas and/or nature. There they become contextualized and intertwined with a statement in relation to contemporaneous political movements.
“I begin by not photographing” Jeff Wall once said – a quote I embraced when I moulded my work flow into immensely complex projects spending months of research interweaving participants, locations and contexts. My latest piece The Silence (I, II) 2016 creates a fixed direction when exhibited parallel to each other, leaving the visitor in a mentally unsafe and hesitant gap. The Silence (I) always rejects while the other photograph always anonymously observes.
In addition, I create abstract work which gain inspiration from a staged world; a world often said to contain truth and reality. Two highly problematic concepts with the power to enforce questionable decision-making. My latest work: Modular Matter, 2016, borrows inspiration from artists such as Inger Sitter and Barbara Kasten while investigating the demarcation between painting and photography as well as the cultural value from certain perspectives.
